Wayfinding and Signage
Background
The Town of Brookline is redesigning Washington Street between Washington Square and Brookline Village using a Complete Streets approach. The new Washington Street corridor will provide safe and accessible options for all travel modes – pedestrians, bicyclists, micro-mobility users, transit riders, public safety vehicles, and motorists.
As part of this effort, the Town is developing wayfinding signage to provide visitors with clear direction to parking, public transit, information, and key destinations within Brookline Village. Brookline Village hosts many small retailers, restaurants, an MBTA station, and multimodal travel activity, including walking and bicycling. In addition, many important public facilities are near Washington Street, including the Town Hall, Public Library, Police and Fire Departments, public parking lots, Pierce School, Brookline High School, and Driscoll School. Improved wayfinding will support all users move around Brookline Village both before they arrive and once they are here.
In February/March 2026, the Town distributed a survey on signage to improve navigating to and within Brookline Village. The survey is now closed and the project team is reviewing the results.
